The Terra Alta was a wooden ship built in Santo Amaro do Pico by master shipbuilder Manuel Joaquim de Melo, following the design of the Nunes Bros. shipyards in California. It mainly sailed the Triangle route, with some regular trips to Terceira and Graciosa.
The boat went through several versions and upgrades throughout its eventful life, which included two shipwrecks and a fire. Interestingly, one of the times it sank (due to a breach in the hull) was in Porto das Velas — an incident that is well documented in photographs.
