Angra do Heroísmo
First-floor room with direct access to the garden.
Built in the city of Hamburg with the intention of being offered to the Jewish State as compensation for the damage inflicted on the Jewish people during the Second World War, this liner, before being named Angra do Heroísmo, bore the name Israel on its bow.
After an initial stage of its life operating the Haifa–New York route, it was purchased by Empresa Insulana de Navegação in 1966 to provide the connection between Lisbon and the archipelagos.
With a capacity for 323 passengers, the liner was frequently chartered in 1971 by the Portuguese Army to transport troops to Guinea-Bissau.
It was the last of the passenger ships to serve the route, making its final voyage to the Azores in 1972, two years before being dismantled for scrap.
